Why Illuminate?

Illuminate /ɪˈl(j)uːmɪneɪt/

verb

  • to light something and make it brighter; light up

  • to make lucid or clear

Perhaps it is that ray of hope in the dark you seek, or clarity amidst chaos. Regardless of where you are at in your journey of recovery or self-discovery, you don’t have to do it alone. With compassion and authenticity, we hope you walk away inspired from illuminating conversations.

Having worked through our own struggles and challenges in life, we know how valuable it is to feel supported and encouraged when you can’t see the light. It takes courage to reach out, even more to work through these hurdles and stay hopeful.

But this is how we grow. This is what makes life more meaningful.

Life can be illuminating.

Amerie enjoys working with adolescents and young adults to help them navigate life's challenges. Similarly, she loves working with adults seeking more fulfilling relationships and self-insight. Shaped by a decade of experience, her clinical expertise spans across a broad range of presenting issues, including eating disorders, OCD, anxiety, depression, attachment/relationship difficulties, complex trauma, parent-child conflict, deliberate self-harm, suicidal behavior, psychosomatic disorders and personality disorders.

Since completing her clinical training in Sydney, Australia on a government-awarded scholarship and returning to Singapore, Amerie served as a Senior Psychologist at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) for close to seven years. She was also Lead of the Adolescent Psychology Team. She was actively involved in program development, projects and research pertaining to adolescent psychology and eating disorders. She co-authored a few publications with the Adolescent Medicine Service in KKH, which have been published in established peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of Adolescent Health. She was additionally awarded a research grant as a Principal Investigator for a study looking into relationship attachment and treatment outcomes for women with metabolic health issues.

On top of overseeing operations of the team, she spearheaded service expansion by developing groups and workshops on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), eating disorders, mindfulness and self-compassion. She provided regular clinical supervision to psychologists-in-training and practising clinical psychologists. She was a recipient of several service awards, including the Singapore Health Quality Service award. She was an Adjunct Lecturer with the National University of Singapore.

Amerie is a full member of the Singapore Psychological Society and listed under the Singapore Register of Psychologists. She is a Registered Clinical Supervisor. In addition to clinical work, she currently provides supervision to clinical psychologists and counselors in both private and community settings. She was previously also a part-time lecturer at NIE-NTU and taught at the postgraduate level. Amerie has been invited as a guest speaker by multiple educational institutions and corporate organizations for her expertise.

As a clinical psychologist, she is trained in several different therapeutic approaches, including family-based therapy (FBT), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), emotionally-focused couples therapy (EFT) and attachment-focused EMDR, to name a few. She is eclectic and process-based in her approach, which often also draws on attachment-focused research and psychodynamic concepts. In 2020, she also became a Certified Yoga Teacher, in a bid to satisfy her curiosity and to delve more into the mind-body connection.

Creating a safe space for clients to work through their difficulties is something Amerie cares deeply about. She honors that in individual therapy, couple/family work, and in group settings. Her work with clients from different cultural backgrounds has further honed her attunement to cultural nuances. She loves the process of empowering her clients and helping them establish new ways of connecting to others and to themselves. She is passionate about co-creating the experience of wonder, openness and curiosity with them – and advocating for brave, wholehearted living.

As an individual, Amerie is extremely curious and enjoys learning immensely. She loves indulging in creative pursuits like writing, podcasting, or coming up with quirky projects. These have helped her learn to embrace her awkward side. She is a word geek, and gets excited about sharing ideas. Her work has been featured on popular platforms, including Honeycombers Singapore. Amerie gets inspired by wisdom, nature, good conversations and people with big hearts. Most of all, she is moved by the beauty of human connections.
